I can’t believe that I got sick again! I think this is the 5th or 6th time I’ve gotten sick this year.
2015 has been a year of big stresses so far for me. Our 18-year old cat, Irma, is having kidney issues and our elder dog, Brenna, has elevated liver numbers. Both of those came out of the blue at the same time and it’s just hard to not worry about them as they get older. There’s been a lot of tests and unplanned expenses involved and I think the stress of it all has played havoc with my immune system.
But don’t worry, I am finally feeling a little better today and I think I’m on my way to being healthy again. I want to share a few of my favorite recipes to have when I’m sick. Of course, you can be healthy and enjoy them just as much!
When I come down with a respiratory virus or a chest cold I crave hot and sour soup. It’s comforting, tangy, full of healthy ingredients and the spice helps open my sinuses just a touch.
This Slow Cooker Vegan Hot and Sour Soup is from my first book, The Vegan Slow Cooker. But even before that, it was one of the first recipes on this blog! It’s hard to believe that we’re in year 5 of Healthy Slow Cooking.
An upset tummy calls for a mild, brothy soup and Chickpea Noodle Soup has been my go-to for that this year. I love a nice broth flavored with nutritional yeast, rosemary and thyme.
If you’re like me, you only have celeriac on hand occasionally. Try spiralizing zucchini, carrots or even sweet potato and using those noodles in place of the celery root ones that’s called for in the recipe.
One other thing that I can’t get enough of when I’m sick is tea. Even sick, you can make a quick chai concentrate and have enough to get yourself through the duration of a cold. The ginger is calming for an upset tummy and the other spices are aromatic and delicious.
If you’re having trouble sleeping when you’re sick you can try this Maple Spice Toddy instead of an over the counter cold medicine. Leave out the bourbon or just add a touch and you’ll be ingesting less alcohol in the toddy than most cold meds!
I hope you are staying healthy and enjoying the barest hints of Spring that are showing up. What are some of the foods that make you feel better when you’re sick?
