Earl Grey Oatmeal w/ Rosewater from Your Slow Cooker or Instant Pot

I am crazy about my Earl Grey tea. I have it almost every chilly morning. Add in some vanilla nondairy milk, and I’m in London Fog heaven. It also makes the best iced tea too! Today, I’m having my tea in my oatmeal and let me tell you it’s delicious there too.

If you were a fan of the old slow cooker recipe, don’t panic, it’s in this post right below the new Instant Pot version below. If you’ve tried crockpot steel-cut oats and aren’t a fan because of the softer texture, you’ll love the chewiness that you’ll get cooking them in the Instant Pot.

Also, in the Instant Pot recipe, I’ve changed from adding Earl Grey Red Tea (rooibos) to any kind you want by brewing the tea first. I just brewed my regular pot of black Earl Grey tea for 4 minutes. Then I measured out 1 1/2 cups for my oats and drank the rest!

If you aren’t a fan of rose flavors, you can use vanilla in its place. But if you want to you could try some lavender extract too.

Instant Pot Earl Grey Oatmeal

Cook Time 3 mins Serves 2 servings     adjust servings

Steel-cut oats cook up fast in your Instant Pot. But don't let the 3 minute cooking time fool you, there is extra time involved in building up pressure and waiting for the pressure to come down. You can put the tea and oats in your Instant Pot before you go to sleep and set the timer to start about 30 minutes before you want to leave the house.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups brewed Earl Grey Tea
  • 1/2 cup steel-cut oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon rosewater or vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon(s) sweetener of your choice

Instructions

  1. Add the brewed tea and oats to your Instant Pot. Put your lid on and make sure the vent is closed. Plug it in and select the manual setting and set to cook for 3 minutes. The Instant Pot timer will begin counting down the time once it gets up to pressure.
  2. Allow the pressure to release naturally. You’ll know when it’s ready because the round silver pressure gauge will drop down. This will take about 5 minutes.
  3. Open and mix in your choice of sweetener and rosewater or vanilla. Serve topped with your nondairy milks. I like to use unsweetened vanilla.

Original Recipe: Slow Cooker Earl Grey Oatmeal with Rosewater

print shopping list
Serves 2 or 3 servings     adjust servings

This is my original recipe for a small slow cooker. You can use green or black Earl Grey tea, but you can't leave the tea bags in the oatmeal overnight or it will be very bitter. Instead, warm the nondairy milk on the stove, then steep the tea bags for the recommended amount of time (black tea around 4 minutes, or green tea about 3 minutes). Remove the tea bags and uses the infused milk to cook the oatmeal with. **Note: this recipe uses a smaller slow cooker that's 1½ to 2 quarts

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup steel-cut oats
  • 2 cups unsweetened nondairy milk
  • 2 teabags red tea Earl Grey (black or green tea will over-steep as it cooks)
  • 1/2 teaspoon rosewater
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon(s) sweetener of your choice

Instructions

    The night before:

    1. Spray your crock with some oil to help with clean up later.
    2. Add everything but rosewater and sweetener.
    3. Cook on low overnight (7 to 9 hours).

    In the morning:

    1. Stir your oatmeal well. It may seem watery at the top but if stirred it should become a more uniform consistency.
    2. Stir in rosewater and sweetener to taste.

I am a huge fan of Earl Grey tea too!! I never travel without my tea bags!
I will try this in crock pot.
Have you used the instant pot for yogurt making yet? if so, how do you like it? Not sure if that is a good feature on the instant pot.

I have made soy yogurt in it and I really like it. I find that I can get a really thick yogurt without a thickener by using a vegan starter and keeping it in the pot for about 12 hours.

          Okay. Good to know
Where do you find Earl Grey Red Tea? Wondering if EarthFare or WF has it?? I have never noticed it but wasn’t looking for it either! 🙂 I usually stick with original Earl Grey.

Do you think this would work with hulled oats too, or do they take more time? Great idea with the tea!

It would work, but you would need more time and possibly a little more liquid. If you cook oat groats already, just sub the tea for the normal amount of liquid you cook them in.

Tea and oats!!! I make a lot of savory oats, but I have never tried adding tea. Maybe cocoa but not tea.
Very easy to try. Rose water is another surprise ingredient but I love it.
