If you live in the triangle area you have to be as much in love with the Bull City Vegan Challenge organizers as I am. Hopefully, you’re making time in your October weekends to try out the special vegan brunch dishes that they have drummed up for us around town.
My first stop last weekend was to the Bull Street Gourmet & Market 3710 Shannon Rd. Durham, NC 27707
Their Vegan choices are available Saturday and Sunday 9am – 3pm:
- Tofu Sweet Potato Hash with Green Veg and Roasted Red Pepper Sauce (GF) – $7.99
- Peanut-corn-potato cake with Coconut Caramelized Onion Sauce and market vegetable (GF) – $7.99
- They also have a tofu sandwich and a vegan cookie on their normal menu.
I had the Tofu Sweet Potato Hash with Broccoli and Roasted Red Pepper Sauce. Unlike the photo on the challenge site, the potatoes were shredded instead of cubed. I think it was better with those thin strands of crunchy potato – it created a great texture.
The whole dish was seasoned perfectly and I loved the way the tofu was seared when the patty was flipped on the grill. (If you are cutting down on salt – pass that info on to the kitchen since otherwise they salt and pepper it before sending it out.)
The sweet potatoes and red pepper sauce made the dish something really special.
My verdict – make sure you get there before the end of the month – I loved it. I’ll be going back to try the Peanut-corn-potato cake. I hope it’s as tasty as the tofu was.
Don’t forget – my latest book,The Great Vegan Bean Book, is now available for pre-order on Amazon!
